Modern Storm Cheat Sheet for GP Madrid and GP Oklahoma City

CHANGES

The only changes to the list since my last update are the addition of the 3rd electromancer over the 4th opt in the main deck and the addition of a gigadrowse in the board over a dispel. The reason for the 3rd electromancer is that the format has sped up a bit so I want to more reliably have a turn 3. In the board I have added a gigadrowse since many decks are now fighting us on the stack and this is a big trump card to counter wars by tapping them down EOT and taking some pressure off our remands.

MATCHUPS

In my previous post I have covered the main hate cards to look out for so I will be just giving the baseline In and Out lists for sideboarding. In the cases of the new matchups covered I will list out the hate commonly faced. I will also give a short description of the game plan I am assuming for how to play the post board games.

TITAN SHIFT

In: 1 Wipe Away, 2 spree

Out: 3 Opt

Post Board Games: Here the matchup changes very slighty as the objective is still to race but they now have artifact based hate like relic and chalice which stop us cold. Thus the main game plan here just becomes to be vigilant with our life total (until at 18 or below) and just jam as usual since they have no instant speed interaction except for bears.

SHADOW

In: Everything except 2 spree and 1 wipe away

Out: 4 gifts, 4 baral, 3 electromancer, 1 Past in Flames

Post Board Games: Here we take out all the weak points of our combo to negate as much interaction as possible. Also now were are way more redundant to help against discard. The main game plan here is to just mini empty a few times or just burn them out with a bolt and grapeshot mid game. Here the biggest thing to be aware of is we can very well win the long game and the main way we lose is by turn 1 discard backed by a quick clock.

ELDRAZI TRON

In: 2 spree, 1 wipe away, 2 empty, 4 pieces

Out: 4 gifts, 1 noxious, 3 opt, 1 grapeshot

Post Board Games: Here our graveyard is heavily under attack. We are able to stick bears quite easily but we will mostly be winning via a quick empty or engine go off with grapeshot remand finish.

COCO DECKS

In: 1 wipe away, 1 dismember, 3 Bolt

Out: 3 opt, 1 remand, 1 grapeshot

Post Board Games: Here the main plan is to just jam a bear on turn 2 as they have very little removal then either deal with an eidolon or just go off as they have very little other hate.

BURN

In: 3 bolt, 2 Empty

Out: 3 opt, 1 Noxious, 1 remand

Post Board Games: We are a huge underdog here so we are just trying to race as quickly as possible while also having a few outs to eidolon. Empty is fine as they often will keep medium hands that have eidolon.

Abzan

In: 4 pieces, 2 empty, 1 dismember, 2 bolt

Out: 4 gifts, 1 noxious, 3 Electromancer, 1 PiF

Post Board Games: Here the games play out very similarly to the shadow matchup in that they have graveyard hate and discard but they have a much slower clock. The trick here is to early empty or build resiliency/grind and hope to be able to jam a baral with rituals to then drive up the storm count for grapeshot remand.

Jeskai

In: 2 Pieces, 2 Empty, 1 wipe away, 2 bolt, 1 dispel, 1 gigadrowse

Out: 2 gifts, 1 noxious, 3 electromancer, 1 grapeshot, 1 PiF, 1 opt

Post Board Games: Here the opponent will likely just sit with mana up and slowly burn us out so we need to construct a turn to tap them low on their EOT. This is done with gifts and now gigadrowse.

Mirror

In: 1 dismember, 2 bolt, 1 dispel, 1 gigadrowse

Out: 3 opt, 1 grapeshot, 1 gifts

Post Board Games: Here the game is all about sticking a bear. Also counters are very important so firing off EOT gifts even if it needs a ritual is most of the time correct to just get them out of the way (especially remand).

Taxes

In: 4 Pieces, 2 Empty, 1 dismember, 3 bolt, 1 wipe away

Out: 4 gifts, 2 electromancer, 1 noxious, 1 PiF, 3 opt

Post Board Games: Here we are under attack on our graveyard and hand. The main idea is to jam a bear/empty as fast as possible and just go off if possible as we cant win the long game very easily.

AD NAUSEUM

In: 1 wipe away, 1 empty, 4 pieces, 1 dispel

Out: 4 gifts, 1 noxious, 1 grapeshot, 1 opt

Post Board Games: They will have discard, counters and leyline so we need to be ready for all of it. Remand is basically a hard counter here since its quite good on ad nauseum. Again they have basically no removal so jam a bear on tun 2 then interact as needed. A big difference for this matchup though is when going off you must always be setting up to go off again the next turn simultaneously due to angel’s grace.

AFFINITY

In: 2 spree, 3 bolt, 1 dismember

Out: 3 remand, 3 opt

ELVES

In: 3 bolt, 1 dismemeber, 1 wipe away

Out: 2 remand, 3 opt

Post Board Games: this is a pure race. The post board games come down to us having a fast enough draw and/or affinity drawing 2 board cards.

JUND

In: 2 bolt, 1 dismember, 2 empty, 4 pieces

Out: 4 Gifts, 1 noxious, 3 electromancer, 1 PiF

Post Board Games: This is similar to jund except they have no reach from bolt and no instant discard in command

5C SHADOW

Hate: spellbomb, surgical, discard, counters.

In: Everything but 2 Spree and 1 dispel

Out: 4 gifts, 4 baral, 3 electromancer, 1 Past in Flames

Post Board Games: Similar to Grixis shadow only here they are better at shoving a clock into play fast. They do not have nearly as many counters though due to no snapcaster

LIVING END

Hate: Leyline (white or black), macabre, jund charm

In: 4 pieces, 1 wipe away

Out: 4 gifts, 1 noxious

Post Board Games: here we are mostly racing but if there is no black leyline in play it is important to get a bear in our graveyard and in play asap so then they can’t use living end to interact with us.

5C HUMANS

Hate: thalia, meddling mage, freebooter

In: 3 bolt, 1 dismember,

Out: 3 opt, 1 remand

Post Board Games: They only have creatures to interact with us so we only want to board in removal and just hope they dont draw a sufficient amount to over power our bolts and grapeshots. Other than that we are basically goldfishing.

LANTERN CONTROL

Hate: white leyline, cage, witchbane orb, discard

In: 4 pieces, 2 spree, 2 Empty, 1 wipe away

Out: 4 gifts, 1 PiF, 1 Grapeshot, 2 remand, 1 electromancer

Post Board Games: This is probably our worst matchup and a huge key is shattering spree and empty. Our best plan is to try and split what they are doing between locking us with leyline/orb/cage and bridge (for empty). One key thing to remember here as well is that Pieces does a great job a breaking through the lantern lock, especially when looking for a spree or wipe away.

TRON

Hate: relic, discard (if GB tron)

In: 4 pieces, 2 spree, 1 empty

Out: 4 gifts, 1 noxious, 1 grapeshot, 1 electromancer

Post Board Games: Relic is a major problem post board as it is easy for them to find and we are also racing their giant spells. A good plan here is to set up a slightly slower win if we see any hate as they arent very aggressive compared to eldrazi tron.

DREDGE

Hate: Leyline (white or black), discard

In: 4 pieces, 1 empty, 1 wipe away

Out: 4 gifts, 1 grapeshot, 1 opt

Post Board Games: Here we are faster and just have to play around black leyline often but a key part of these post board games is to usually play bears on the tun you go off as they have lots of sorcery speed ways to kill them but almost none at instant speed. Also beware of dredged driven//despair and failure//comply.

UR Breach

Hate: relic, counters

In: 2 Pieces, 2 Empty, 1 gigadrowse, 1 dispel, 1 wipe away

Out: 2 gifts, 1 noxious, 1 PiF, 3 electromancer

Post Board Games: plays very similar to jeskai only they have an oops i win button forcing us to try and win earlier.

UR KIKI

In: 2 Pieces, 1 Empty, 1 gigadrowse, 1 dispel, 1 wipe away, 2 bolt

Out: 2 gifts, 1 noxious, 1 grapeshot, 3 electromancer, 1 PiF

Post Board Games: same as against breach but here we can actually interact with the combo a bit vua bolt/wipe and its not instant speed.

Merfolk

Hate: relic, counters

In: 4 pieces, 3 bolt, 1 dismember, 1 wipe away, 2 empty

Out: 4 gifts, 1 noxious, 1 PiF, 1 remand, 1 grapeshot, 3 opt

Post Board Games: our graveyard isnt safe but they arent exactly the quickest clock so our bolts can be used frequently on lords to just survive longer. Also we can jam bears with almost impunity and have spree and wipe away for chalice and relic.

BR Hollow One

Hate: Leyline (white or black)

In: 4 Pieces, 2 Empty, 3 bolt

Out: 4 gifts, 3 opt, 1 PiF, 1 Noxious

Post Board Games: this is a pure race where we have to jam as fast as possible while our board plan has to respect black leyline

UW Control

Hate: relic, leyline, rest in peace, counters

In: 2 Pieces, 2 Empty, 1 bolt, 1 dispel, 1 gigadrowse, 1 wipe away

Out: 2 gifts, 1 PiF, 1 Noxious, 1 Grapeshot, 2 Electromancer, 1 pyretic ritual

Post Board Games: Plays similar to jeskai only they dont have a real clock or good removal for bears. Really just comes down to finding the best window for our EOT tap down and go off with our infinite time.

8 RACK

IN: 4 Pieces, 2 empty

Out: 1 Gifts, 3 remand, 2 electromancer

Post Board Games: The main plan here is to make land drops and empty at some point all while making sure liliana doesn’t resolve and have time to ultimate. Also the graveyard isnt too dangerous so we leave in our gifts and PiF. We board in pieces as we will want as many ways as we can (while not being too clunky) to get back up on cards. They are able to turn the corner quick with just a couple rack effects in play so always be aware.

  1. Thank you so much Caleb! This looks awesome. The write up is impeccably helpful. I did have some issues with the main board however… I count 59. I copied the list exactly into MTGO, and I found that you have room for both the opt and the third electromancer in that list. Did you mean something else by that?
