Fetchless Modern Storm in 2018

Current List:

Modern Storm 1-3-18

Changes:

In the main deck the only change from my previous post is the addition of an Unsubstantiate over the 3rd Electromancer. The reason for this is that now many decks have been including maindeck creatures that we cannot beat, such as Meddling Mage naming Grapeshot. In the past I have always advocated against main deck answers due to them not helping us execute our primary game plan. Unsubstantiate fixes this problem though while also being able to function as a part of our combo due to its other mode as a medium remand. Some things to also keep in mind about Unsubstantiate are that it works on uncounterable spells and can save our bears or buy time with the bounce.

In the sideboard the only change is the addition of an Echoing Truth over the Dismember. Here we are making a concession to our opponents being prepared with a variety of hate permanents we may need to get rid of.

In my previous posts I have covered the main hate cards and game plans for the following matchups so here I will just list the In and Out baseline sideboarding. After this section I will list some new matchups but they will also include both game plans as well as main hate cards that we will face.

NEW MATCHUPS:

LIVING END (Mono Blue)

Hate: Leyline (white and black), counters, Tormod’s Crypt, Nimble obstructionist

IN: 4 Pieces, 1 Dispel, 1 Wipe Away, 1 Gigadrowse

OUT: 4 Gifts, 1 Noxious, 1 PiF, 1 Opt

Game 1: Here they have only counter spells as real interaction against us. They also are not as fast as traditional living end so we can try to sculpt a somewhat resilient kill. There are some important things to note though. One is that it is usually correct to jam a bear on turn 2 since even if it dies or gets countered it makes living end a risky card to cast or if we resolve another bear later on then living end is not an answer to actually remove a medallion effect from our battlefield. Another is that we should respect nimble obstructionist if possible as it is an effect we have no answer for that counters the storm mechanic.

Post Board Games: Here the main change is that they will be bringing in a fair amount of graveyard hate and possibly some dismembers or white leylines. Here this just means we switch over to a Pieces engine and play similarly to game one only respecting now that our creatures may not be able to come back on a living end. Also if you see white leyline in game 2 you would want to board in the echoing truth over dispel.

PONZA

Hate: Trinisphere, Relic

IN: 1 Wipe Away, 1 Echoing Truth, 1 Spree, 2 Empty

OUT: 1 grapeshot, 1 unsubstantiate, 1 PiF, 1 remand, 1 opt

Game 1: Here the name of the game is to get a bear in play as soon as possible. They commonly have few answers and if they lead with a mana accelerator on turn 1 we will most likely not get above 2 lands for some time. other than that it plays similar to valakut in that we can remand a bigger spell, like primal command or inferno titan, then proceed to go off. One thing to also remember is they have blood moon so manamorphose has a higher importance and land sequencing is huge as to not expose us to being cut off of a color.

Post Board Games: Here the only new thing to remember is that they have artifacts that we cant win through such as trinisphere and that the graveyard isn’t completely safe due to relic. We still are on the jam a bear as early as possible plan though, barring being able to hold up a remand with additional land drops.

SAHEELI EVOLUTION

Hate: Eidolon of Rhetoric, Gaddock Teeg, Aven Mindcensor, Glen Elendra Archmage, Siguarda Host of Herons

IN: 3 bolt, 1 wipe away, 1 echoing truth

OUT: 3 remand, 2 opt

Game 1: This is a pure race as they are trying to assemble the Saheeli Felidar combo with minimal interaction for us. Now that we have unsubstantiate in the maindeck we can answer the eldrich evolution targets that used to be game over, such as meddling mage.

Post Board Games: Now they have access to more hate creatures but we still have to race their combo. This plays out similar to counters company except that their tutor effects are sorcery speed, which is easier to deal with but also they have access to Glen Elendra which is extremly hard to deal with outside of wipe away. One thing to note here is that since eldrich evolution costs 3 and most of the hate also costs 3 or less bolting a turn one accelerator key.
