Modern Storm for SCG Milwaukee

THE LIST

Modern Storm 4-2-18

CHANGES

First to notice is that I have not changed anything from the maindeck since my last post. This is mostly due to the meta being quite stable (as far as tactics) so that still being a well oiled machine is the best game one plan. The flex slot that many typically change is the 3rd Opt for either a Bolt or Search for Azcanta. Both of these options do give some extra flexibility to the main but at the cost of having a card that can just be dead, and in the case of Search it wont have any text when trying to go off until a turn later. While definitely defensible in many metas I still prefer the better consistency option of sticking to Opt.

In the sideboard though there is one big change and that is the addition of 2 Search of Azcanta over 2 Ascension. This may seem a bit odd as the Ascensions have been great as well as adding another bear type axis to operate on. This plan though has been something that has a big problem with lots of direct graveyard hate, as well as being a card that does nothing on its own. I’ve been noticing that lots of our grindy matchups are determined more by having the ability to cantrip to what we want over just raw power in play. Such as just seeing that cantrip or ritual a turn sooner due to search can make it so we may go off during a window given to us. Also Rest in Peace is on the upswing so having a card that still filters is great vs an actual brick. Also we tend to lean Ascension against Jund/(G/B/x) and here we actually have a bit of an upgrade in that we can flip it to grind even harder, as they have little land hate, and it is not dependent on us drawing the correctly named spells at that right time to work.

One thing that may seem odd is that I pretty much glossed over the flip side of Search as I have been viewing the card as just rampant growth when flipped, instead of the activation being part of the plan innately. The reason for this is that there is a lot of land hate out of grindy decks in the form of Field of Ruin and Ghost Quarter. Also The payoff from flipping is not nearly as powerful as active Ascension so viewing it in that way would only lead me back to Ascension and that even with just the rampant growth us being able to jump towards a PiF or an extra mana to be able to fire off another ritual in response to a kill spell on a bear is big. After using this as my baseline for testing though search has over performed for me in that many games ascension would’ve won this still does, while also working in the face of RiP, as mentioned above. Thus the main role of the card will be similar to what Asencion was doing for certain matchups but just instead of exploding all over them we more quietly assemble the combo sequence.

MATCHUPS

Here I will be posting an update to all same matchups as the previous post, as well as a few new ones. One thing to note is that where the Searches are included over Ascension as in these spots our role hasn’t really changed just now that one of our grindy engines is a bit slower than before, as mentioned above.

NEW MATCHUPS

KCI

Hate: relic, cage, guttural response

IN: 1 Spree, 1 Explosives

OUT: 1 Grapeshot, 1 Opt

Gameplan: This is a pure race where we are each trying to turn 3-4 each other. Here we basically employ the same strats as tron only with trying to go fast and reamanding the big spell (KCI) before going off,as they have little disruption.

Postboard: Also after board they have minimal interaction and keeping up mana is hard for them so just jam when you can, but always be aware that 1 red up means gifts can get countered.

Tribal Zoo

Hate: counterspells, Teeg, Cannonist

IN: 3 Bolt, 2 Empty

OUT: 3 Opt, 2 Remand

Gameplan: Here this matchup functions similarly to RB Hollow One in that they have a fast creature based clock with interaction for our bears and hurt their own life total. Thus we just try to find the opening window and jam.

Postboard: Again we maintain similar strats to Hollow One, except that our graveyard is safer. Thus we just still try to race but also Empty is great here due to them hurting their own life total so much, in spite of being able to produce creatures to block.

  1. After watching some of your legacy videos, I was really impressed at storms ability to disrupt while still going off. Have you ever considered running a Grixis version of storm in modern? Almost entirely to use discard spells from ththe sideboard as a preemptive answer to hate cards against us? I know it sounds wild but maybe it’s the right direction? Just thought I get some feed back from the storm master!

    • Unfortunately since we need the enablers (bears) in modern we don’t really have the space or ability to add in a disruption package like that. Also as a board package it would then be worse than bounce as we can only answer hate preemptively then.
