Modern Storm for Post Dominaria

THE LIST

Modern Storm 4-17-18

CHANGES

Here the maindeck has no changes as what I stated about the meta in my previous post is still pretty true, with the only difference being in a higher prevalence of aggro. The “flex” slot of the third Opt is still there for myself but if the meta settles post dominaria in a very very creature aggro heavy place the Bolt main is possible.

In the sideboard though we have a couple changes to what I have found to be the 2 sideboard “flex slots”. Instead of the previous 2 Search for Azcanta/Treasure Map we now have an abrade and a Chandra, Torch of Defiance. The reason for the change was mainly due to first with the down tick in midrange and control we could cut down on a grindy card. This worked out perfectly since at the same time we are now having to fight a new hate piece, Damping Sphere. [First as a few notes on the Sphere: (1)This card is basically a worse Rule of law except more decks can play it. (2) It doesn’t actively do anything so the deck would need to have both bad storm and Tron matchups to want to sideboard it. (3) It will be over sideboarded for a bit as it’s a new toy but will settle down.] Thus to combat this new problem I wanted something that could answer it and still be good in many other places. So abrade was the best answer. Many small creature decks also have bad tron matchups too so this will get great value there even when they don’t have sphere, plus it does work in the hollow one, affinity, lantern and UR Prison matchups. Then with 1 remaining grindy slot left I decided to toy around with another option than the default Search and Chandra has been suggested. (Want to take a moment to give credit to Janus and the storm community for both these ideas, you’re awesome!). After testing Chandra fulfills a lot of the grindy matchup roles in one card as being a search/empty hybrid. Her plus abilities are similar to both sides of search so she can either accelerate us into a PiF or crate card advantage. She also creates a subgame similar to empty in that if unanswered for a few turns wins the game with her ultimate, that can also be cast via rituals on turn 2.

NEW MATCHUPS

GRIXIS CONTROL

Hate: discard, counters, spellbomb, surgical

IN: 4 Pieces, 2 Empty, 1 Gigadrowse, 1 Chandra, 1 Wipe Away

OUT: 2 Gifts, 2 Electromancer, 2 Baral, 1 Noxious, 1 Remand,1 Grapeshot

Gameplan: Here we play a grindy game similar to control but they have way less countermagic and are a bit harsh on their lifetotal. The downside for us though is that they have discard unlike normal control. Here we can play similarly to Jeskai only we need to be careful of tasigur and lilly as they are low cost ways to put aggression out, similar to the bolt snap bolt pivot of jeskai.

Postboard: here not much changes only they have a bit more discard and some graveyard hate. They are still a bit clunkier than jeskai though and through their painful mana/thoughtseizes we can wear them down via sub games.

GW VALUE TOWN

Hate: eidolon, ooze, surgical, bojuka bog

IN: 3 Bolt, 1 Wipe away, 1 Explosives

OUT: 3 opt, 1 Grapeshot, 1 Noxious

Gameplan: Here we are basically playing against a coco deck that only has ooze to interact and no combo kill. basically just be careful with mana if the game goes a bit longer as they can randomly ghost quarter you off a color.

Postboard: Here again its just like normal coco decks only we have to be very careful of surgical, this is why we board down on grapeshot as we don’t want to use it to mow down their board if we can help it. Also watch out for Knight of the Reliquary into bojuka bog.

UR PRISON (*)

Hate: all the prison artifacts

IN: 4 Pieces, 1 Abrade, 1 Chandra, 1 Spree, 1 Wipe away, 2 Empty

OUT: 4 Gifts, 2 electromancer, 1 unsubstantiate, 1 noxious, 1 opt, 1 grapeshot

Gameplan: Here we are basically up against a lantern deck only instead of that lock we get chalice’d into oblivion. Thus we just play similar to that matchup only we have to also keep chalice in mind.

Postboard: We gain the same interaction as the lantern matchup but here they have many more welding jars, thus bounce is of higher importance. Also remand is a lot better here since they want to tap 4 mana to chalice against us.

GP HOLLOW VINE

Hate: leyline of the void

IN: 4 Pieces, 2 Empty, 1 abrade

OUT: 4 Gifts, 2 remand, 1 repeal

Gameplan: Its a pure race where we are a bit behind. Basically from our perspective its a faster BR hollow one deck that cant kill our bears.

Postboard: here the only difference is they have leyline on average, thus its the exact same as before only now we don’t usually have a graveyard. We don’t bring in bolt here as they don’t have any early damage creatures to kill (such as flameblade adept) and increase our clock. The bolts can only kill early vengevine and they also commonly have brige from below so killing it is not that great anyway. We just want to dig and combo off.
