Legacy ANT Post SCG Atlanta List, Thoughts and Sideboard Guide

LIST

Legacy ANT 5-1-18

MAINDECK

In the main I have again changed nothing since the meta has somewhat stagnated to Blue DRS, Prison, and Combo. I do want to note though that I have grown less happy with Rain of Filth. It’s bad against combo and prison plus is only ok against Delver. Going forward I will be testing a badlands over it to be the 15th land to help smooth out mana.

SIDEBOARD

I know that in my previous ANT post I talked highly of Flusterstorm to combat the presence of combo. For this being a team tournament though I anticipated very little Storm or Snake and Show, but a big uptick in reanimator. Thus surgical was the choice I went with. It still has utility against Storm and Sneak and Show. Another change for this meta was that I felt delver would be very heavily represented so the Ad Nauseum was replaced with the 4th Cabal Therapy. This should maybe be a Thoughtseize to fill a similar role but being more flexible.

MATCHUPS

There aren’t really any new common matchups to cover currently for legacy as the format has condensed. Below Ive noted the the changes where surgical come in that aren’t as obvious as well as one where their boarding has changed a lot for our play patterns to change a lot.

GRIXIS DELVER

In: 1 Therapy, 1 Surgical

Out: 1 Ad Nauseum, 1 Dark Petition

Changes: Here grixis has been running more Spell Pierce so the Dark Petition is also a bit of a liability now. I also wanted A bit more discard then just 7 but 8 always felt liek too much. Thus the surgical is here mainly to be a therapy/probe hybrid card that can also tinker with their DRS and Brainstorms. Information in this matchup is super important also by being free plays around their soft counters well.

SULTAI DELVER

IN: 1 Therapy

OUT: 1 Dark Petition

STONEBLADE

IN: +2 Fatal Push, +2 Chain of Vapor

OUT: -1 Dark Petition, -1 Cabal Ritual, -1 Rain of Filth, -1 Preordain

SNEAK and SHOW

IN: +1 Surgical, +2 Chrome Mox, +1 Chain of Vapor

OUT: -1 Dark Petition, -1 Cabal Ritual, -1 Island, -1 Rain of Filth

Change: Here Surgical serves a similar purpose as in the delver matchup as knowing which type of draw they have (permission based or fast combo) important to establist turn 1

MIRROR/TES

IN: +1 Surgical, +1 Therapy

OUT: -1 Empty the Warrens, -1 Rain of Filth,

RB REANIMATOR

IN: +3 Chrome Mox, +2 Chian of Vapor, +2 Echoing Truth, +1 Tendrils of Agony, +2 Surgical

OUT: -3 Cabal Therapy, -2 Preordain, -1 Rain of Filth, -1 Island, -1 Dark Petiton, -1 Empty the Warrens, -1 Ponder

DEATH & TAXES

IN:  +3 Chrome Mox, +2 Chian of Vapor, +2 Echoing Truth, +2 Fatal Push, +1 Cabal Therapy

OUT: -3 Duress, -2 Preordain, -2 Ponder, -1 Rain of Filth, -1 Island, -1 Dark Petition

LANDS

IN: +3 Chrome Mox, +2 Chian of Vapor, +2 Echoing Truth, +2 Hurkyl’s Recall, +1 Tendrils of Agony

OUT: -3 Cabal Therapy, -1 Preordain, -1 Dark Petition, -1 Empty the Warrens,-1 Rain of Filth, -3 Duress

BURN

IN:  +3 Chrome Mox, +2 Chian of Vapor, +2 Echoing Truth, +2 Fatal Push, +1 Tendrils of Agony

OUT: -3 Duress, -2 Preordain, -2 Ponder, -1 Ad Nauseum, -1 Rain of Filth, -1 Island

MIRACLES

IN: +3 Chrome Mox, +2 Chain of Vapor, +1 Echoing Truth, +1 Ad Nauseum

OUT: -2 Preordain, -1 Dark Petition, -1 Island, -1 Rain of Filth, -2 Ponder

ELVES

IN: +2 Chrome Mox, +1 Chain of Vapor, +1 Tendrils of Agony

OUT: -1 Empty the Warrens, -1 Dark Petition, -1 Rain of Filth, -1 Island

TURBO DEPTHS

IN:  +2 Chrome Mox, +2 Chain of Vapor, +2 Echoing Truth, +1 Tendrils of Agony

OUT: -3 Cabal Therapy, -1 Empty the Warrens, -1 Dark Petition, -1 Rain of Filth, -1 Island

Change: Here turbo depths is no longer commonly running artifact prison pieces like Lands does but instead has surgicals . Thus we no loner need Recall but want all the other bounce for Marit Lage. Also now we don’t have to worry about keeping hands than have or can find some immediately.

TEMUR DELVER

IN: +1 Therapy

OUT: -1 Ad Nauseum

Gameplan Post SB: Here we are playing similar to grixis and sultai except that they can only interact on the stack with us and due to no DRS we can use the graveyard much more easily. In games 2 ad 3 we are using the same “window” strategy that I outlined in my previous post in the Grixis delver section, except we can be more confident in our control role, as they have no discard.

GRIXIS SHADOW

HATE: lots of counters, discard, surical, cage, spellbomb

IN: +1 Tendrils of Agony, +2 Fatal Push

OUT: -1 Ad NAuseum, -1 Dark Petiton, -1 Cabal Ritual

4C PILE (traditional)

Hate: discard, counters, graveyard hate

IN: +2 Chain of Vapor

OUT: -1 Dark Petition, -1 Empty The Warrens

4C PILE (Dak Fayden)

IN/OUT: nothing

MONO RED PRISON

IN: +3 Chrome Mox, +2 Chian of Vapor, +2 Echoing Truth, +2 Hurkyl’s Recall

OUT: -2 Preordain, -1 Ponder, -1 Rain of Filth, -1 Underground sea, -3 Cabal Therapy, -1 Dark Petition,

ELDRAZI

IN:  +3 Chrome Mox, +2 Chian of Vapor, +2 Echoing Truth, +2 Hurkyl’s Recall

OUT: -2 Preordain, -1 Ponder, -1 Rain of Filth, -1 Island, -3 Cabal Therapy, -1 Dark Petition,

  1. Hi Caleb,
Have you considered adding a third Underground Sea instead of the Badlands to replace the Rain of Filth? I have been doing this for some time, and have found it excellent!
One problem I have often found in the 15 land builds, is that having a second land that does not produce blue can be problematic sometimes when you open up an otherwise good hand with cantrips, but no blue source. The third Underground Sea gets around this admirably.
