Fetchless Storm for SCG Baltimore

THE LIST

Modern Storm 8-11-18

CHANGES

Here in the maindeck there has only been one change and that is the addition of the 12th cantrip (4th Sleight of Hand from the previous post) over the second Remand. Remand has been getting worse with the speeding up of modern and even against the bigger slow decks currently, UW and Mardu, it isn’t at its greatest either. Also, just upping the consistency of the deck is something that helps a lot too in the face of all the graveyard hate. I had been trending the other way in testing towards another bear and less cantrips but this (along with the SB change) were inspired by looking at and thinking about what those at the PT had done.

In the SB there is only the change of the 3rd Empty the Warrens over the Gigadrowse. This is mainly a concession to the blue based control decks shifting to permanent based hate for us. At first I tried a second wipe away which was ok but the 3rd Empty has proven to be better in that it also is great with a “kill them in waves” plan to grind them out against control while also helping in our turbo fast matchups which we either have no control over what they do and/or are very unfavored, such as Bridegvine and Burn. Plus this approach still works well with the Pieces of the Puzzle plan post board vs many of these decks.

Tron

In: 4 Pieces of the Puzzle, 1 Wipe Away, 1 Peer Through Depths

Out: 4 Gifts Ungiven, 1 Noxious Revival, 1 Sleight of Hand

Role change note: Here I’ve stopped boarding in Empty since it has become worse (even with surgical being around) due to them keeping in  more Oblivion Stones in plus Walking Ballistas. Also I have started keeping in both Past in Flames due to needing to hit a pay off when forced to go early more often. This does fly in the face of them still running lot of graveyard hate but our most common way to win involves 2 Grapeshot or Grapeshot + Remand so forcing the surgical onto the stack more or punishing them tapping out more often is quite helpful

Ponza

In: 3 Lightning Bolt, 2 Abrade, 1 Echoing Truth

Out: 3 Opt, 1 Grapeshot, 1 Repeal, 1 Remand

UR Wizards

In: 4 Pieces of the Puzzle,  3 Lighting Bolt, 3 Empty the Warrens

Mardu

In: 4 Pieces of the Puzzle, 2 Lighting Bolt, 3 Empty the Warrens, 2 Abrade, 1 Peer Through Depths

Out: 4 Gifts ungiven, 2 Baral, 2 Goblin Electromancer, 1 Past in Flames, 1 Noxious Revival, 1 Repeal, 1 Remand

Grixis Death’s Shadow

In: 4 Pieces of the Puzzle, 3 Lighting Bolt, 3 Empty the Warrens, 1 Echoing Truth, 1 Peer Through Depths

Out:  4 Gifts ungiven, 2 Baral, 2 Goblin Electromancer, 1 Past in Flames, 1 Noxious Revival, 1 Repeal, 1 Remand

UW Control

In:  4 Pieces of the Puzzle, 3 Empty the Warrens, 1 Echoing Truth, 1 Peer Through Depths, 1 Wipe Away

Out: 4 Gifts Ungiven, 1 Past in Flames, 1 Goblin Elctromancer, 1 Noxious Revival, 1 Unsubstantiate, 1 Pyretic Ritual, 1 Grapeshot

Role change note: Here post board we are no longer trying to only brute force of wait until Gigadrowse. Now we try to focus more on waves of Empties for 4-6 Goblins to slowly grind them out with the goal to chip away at their life total for a medium grapeshot way later (if all the goblin waves fail). Also now we are highly graveyard independent so their increase in graveyard hate is also side stepped.

Jeskai Control

In: 4 Pieces of the Puzzle, 3 Empty the Warrens, 1 Echoing Truth, 1 Peer Through Depths, 1 Wipe Away

Out: 3 Gifts Ungiven, 2 Goblin Electromancer, 1 Baral, 1 Noxious Revival, 1 Past in Flames, 1 Pyretic Ritual, 1 Unsubstantiate

Role change note: Here we have a similar plan as UW but we need to be more aggressive due to them having more interaction and the ability to pivot to killing us easier. be very wary of your life total as they can sometimes just race small Empties with a Clique plus burn.

HARDENED SCALES AFFINITY

Hate: Damping Sphere, Relic, Surgical, Cage

In: 3 Lightning Bolt, 2 Abrade, 1 Echoing Truth

Out: 4 Sleight of Hand, 1 Remand, 1 Noxious Revival

Preboard: This is a pure race where they are an on average faster affinity deck that will Inkmoth us to death a lot. We also want to aggressively “mow the lawn” with grapeshot as they are also a lot more linear and more reliant on Steel Overseer. One thing to remember though is that bears will die more often due to their Walking Ballistas.

Postboard: They have a lot more hate than traditional affinity with spheres, relics, cages, and surgicals. Thus they do have to dilute their deck a fair bit so we will have some more time. We also cant just jam with impunity when they tap out suspiciously due to the high number of surgicals. The bolts also come in here due to their heavy reliance on overseer and ravager + nexus/ballista to kill us quickly

  1. Hi Celeb,
just wondering why you side out Noxious against several of the decks with Surgical Extraction? Isn’t Noxious one of the better ways to fight Survical?

    • In a lot of the matchups we are going to be grinding more so won’t need the noxious piles from gifts which is the big reason to include it. Also we board in Empty a lot in those cases to help mitigate.

  2. Hi Caleb,
I saw your list for the scg using 2 thing in the ice in the sideboard, i find this tech very interesting. Can you tell me how they performed? did you like the change?
